Liminal Barriers
In January and February of 2014, the UK experienced six major storms within short intervals, causing hazardous conditions along the South-West coastline. The South-West main line railway in Dawlish, Devon, suffered severe damage, disrupting a crucial transport link for weeks. Widespread flooding, infrastructure damage, and coastal erosion were observed in many affected areas. The damage caused to the sea defences and coastlines has resulted in extensive ongoing work and investment to defend against repeat events every year, events which may become more destructive as the years go on.
The aerial perspective offered by modern drone technology allows for a unique visual narrative, unveiling the intricate patterns of erosion and documenting the diverse forms of sea defences implemented in an effort to safeguard our coastlines. This project conveys the delicate balance between the power of the sea and our attempts to mitigate the seemingly unstoppable impact that nature has on our coastlines and livelihoods.
